Beckham Berated

Imagine you’re shopping for a new pair of glasses. You are
interested in the color and style of the frames and the shape of the lenses.
But what about the shape of the model wearing the glasses?
Is a thin model with an angular face going to make it more likely for you to
purchase a certain set of frames?
Victoria Beckham thinks so.
The designer has received criticism for the model she used
in a social media post about her new eyewear collection.
The model wears a champagne-colored, flowy top and large,
square-shaped glasses. It is the model’s thin frame, made to look even thinner
in the baggy clothes, that has caused an uproar.
With the wave of body positivity and plus-sized models like
Ashley Graham gaining a huge popularity, people are more conscious than ever of
the models that brands are using to promote their collections.
People immediately took notice and were quick to point out
how unhealthy the model looked.
Users posted that the model looked “emaciated” and “sickly
skinny,” while some pointed out that body-shaming model Giedre Dukauskaite was
also wrong.
The most frustrating aspect of the campaign for many was
Beckham’s apparent hypocrisy.
Beckham pledged her support for the “Health is Beauty”
campaign back in 2010, when she promised to stop using unhealthily skinny
models in her shows.
It is a transformative period in the fashion world with more
people calling for a wider range of body types being represented on the runway
than ever before.
While all body shapes and sizes should be celebrated and not
condemned, it is important that brands continue to promote health over an ideal
body shape.
