The Newest Beauty Craze: Color Correcting

2014 was the year of contouring.

2015 was the year of strobing.

2016 is the year of... Color correcting!

You can't walk into a Sephora or an Ulta without noticing giant displays splashed with pastel pinks, salmons, lavenders, oranges, greens and blues.

From concealers to primers to powders and palettes, it seems like every brand is putting out new products designed to correct any kind of redness, darkness or dullness your face may carry.

Color correcting is not a new concept, Makeup Forever has had a color correcting palette for years, but recently every beauty company is swearing that everyone needs to have a rainbow of color on their face if their makeup is going to look good.

So does this really work?

In moderation, yes.

If you, like myself, have atrocious under-eye circles that even the fullest of concealers cannot hide then a nice, creamy salmon color could help.

Or if you suffer from extremely sensitive and red skin, a light green primer could reduce that redness in an instant.

But do you need every color on your face everyday to look good?

No.

It is very easy to get carried away with this trend.

Not everyone needs a green primer, a purple highlighter and a pink concealer to look put together.

And yes, the order you apply the products does matter.

Don't wait to put on your pink concealer, apply it before foundation to avoid looking insane.

I do think, however, that applying a full coverage concealer on top of a correcting fluid kind of defeats the entire purpose.

I suggest using a light color correcting concealer after using a more full coverage concealer but before you apply foundation.

Obviously, primers should be used before all face makeup while powders should be used after.

So is color correcting worth the extra steps and absolutely necessary to every one's beauty routine? Or is it just another trend to get beauty obsessed people to spend more money?

In short, yes to both questions.

Color correcting can really help you if you have noticeable discoloration.

Not every single person, however, needs every possible kind of color correcting product.

Buy what your face needs, not what Sephora says you need.

  1. I had never heard of color correcting before reading your post. It is a very interesting concept to put greens and purples on your face, but if it works, I'd be willing to try! I like how you gave your recommendations of how to use these different products. Great job!
